Thai Massage is a component of Traditional Thai Medicine which has been practiced for many centuries. It is rooted in Ayurvedic Medicine which means that Thai Massage is an art form similar to yoga in its’ practical and spiritual applications. Due to the amount of stretching into yoga-like positions involved in Thai Massage it is often referred to as “lazy man’s yoga”. It differs from traditional western forms of massage in many ways. Thai Massage is traditionally practiced on a floor mat and the client remains fully clothed. No lotions or oils are used. During the massage, the practitioner uses acupressure, rocking, rhythmic muscle compressions, assisted yoga-like stretching, and energy meridian work. The practitioner may use palms, back of the hands, elbows, thumbs, forearms, feet, and knees to perform the various techniques. Similar to Shiatsu and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Thai Massage promotes the stimulation and relaxation of body and mind through an improved flow of energy. The goal of Thai Massage is to promote natural healing by bringing the body and mind back into a state of balance and harmony.
Thai Massage can provide the following benefits: stress relief, improved circulation, improved flexibility, improved focus and energy levels, better muscle tone, deep relaxation, and reduction of muscle tightness, strain, or fatigue.
Due to the level of increased circulation it encourages, Thai Massage assists with lymphatic function, repairing of tissue, detoxifying of the body, and immune system functioning. The acupressure and stretching is especially beneficial to athletes and anyone experiencing tired, stiff, and sore muscles due to over-exertion or repetitive use. Thai Massage can be beneficial to the client’s overall health by supporting and encouraging the body’s natural healing process. Each session is customized to fit the abilities and special considerations of the recipient. Thai Massage is a wonderful artful modality for relaxing and rejuvenating the body, mind, and soul to bring back balance and an overall sense of wellness.
